A Nigerian man identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service following a foiled alleged bank robbery operation in the Labone area of Accra.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police, officers received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on August 13 indicating that a group of suspected armed robbers was planning coordinated attacks on GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank, all located in Labone.

Acting on the intelligence, police officers were immediately deployed to the area, where they reportedly spotted members of the suspected gang inside two vehicles parked near the targeted banks.

Police said one of the vehicles sped off after the occupants noticed the officers, triggering a pursuit that led to the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi. However, another occupant of the same vehicle reportedly escaped.

According to the police, suspects in the second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing at officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The shootout reportedly resulted in the d£ath of two suspected robbers.

During the operation, officers recovered a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17, and a blow pistol, all of which have been taken into police custody as evidence.

The Ghana Police Service said Augustine Okechuku Maazi remains in custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations, while the bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect who escaped during the operation.
