A newborn baby boy has been found alive after he was allegedly abaπdoned inside a sanitary trash bin at a toilet in Penang International Airport, Malaysia.

The infant was reportedly discovered on August 31 after a cleaner heard crying coming from a sanitary bin inside a toilet designated for people with disabilities and alerted the police.

Distressing footage from the scene showed the newborn lying inside the bin, which was lined with a blue plastic bag, as he cried.

The baby reportedly still had his umbilical cord attached to the placenta when airport staff rescued him from the bin.

“Cleaning staff heard cries coming from a sanitary bin in a toilet designated for people with disabilities and called police,” Southwest District police chief Anuwal Ab Wahab said.

The newborn was subsequently taken to Penang Hospital for medical attention, where doctors reportedly found him to be in generally good condition.

Following a review of CCTV footage from the airport, authorities reportedly arrested a 23-year-old woman and a 22-year-old Burmese national who works as a security guard.

“The man was detained to assist with investigations into the case, and he was also found to have failed to produce valid travel documents,” the police chief said.

Authorities said the case was being investigated under Section 317 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which relates to the abaπdonment of a child under 12 by a parent or person having care of the child.

A person convicted under the provision can face up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both.

Police have not established that either suspect is the baby’s parent. Forensic tests are reportedly being conducted to determine their relationship to the newborn.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment are ongoing.
