NDLEA arrests major illicit drug lord on watchlist in Bayelsa

A significant illegal drug distributor in Yenagoa has been taken into custody by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Bayelsa State Command.

Chimezie Collins, also known as Mezico and the proprietor of MEZICO Pharmacy on the Mbiam-Yenagoa road in Kpansia, Yenagoa, was detained for possessing illicit drugs.

A total of 1900 tablets/caplets of various hard and controlled drugs, including Tramadol 200 mg, Tramadol 100 mg, Swinol/Rophnol, Diazepam, and Molly (a designer drug), were found on him.

Other drugs include 150 bottles of Diazepam and pentazocine injection, and 77 bottles of codeine with a total weight of 12.461 Kgs and a market value of about N3 million

The Public Relations Officer, NDLEA, Bayelsa Command, SN Daniel Obah, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, April 2, 2026, said that the suspect is an unrepentant notorious drug distributor of controlled and hard drugs who has been on the Command’s watchlist for about two years now. 

The State Commander of NDLEA, Bayelsa State Command, Kanu Sunny Chukwuemeka, in his reaction to the arrest, commended NDLEA officers for maintaining a high level of professionalism in tracking and the subsequent arrest of the suspect. 

Kanu was quoted to have expressed gratitude to the Chairman/ Chief Executive of the agency, Brig. Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa for his visionary leadership through an intelligence-led framework in the fight against drug abuse/trafficking.

He also thanked the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his full support to the command in all of its efforts aimed at cutting down the supply and reducing the demand for drugs across Bayelsa State.

Obah stated that  Kanu seized the opportunity to again warn drug dealers and traffickers to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
