A Nigerian man has shared his experience of supporting his family financially, claiming that his wife was unable to assist him when their daughter was hospitalised despite having ₦600,000 available.
According to the man, he regularly makes efforts to provide for his wife and household, even though his income is not always stable.
He said he buys shawarma for his wife after work and purchases foodstuff in advance because he wants to ensure there is enough food at home whenever his finances become tight.
The man said the situation became particularly difficult when their daughter was admitted to hospital and he did not have enough money readily available to cover the expenses.
He claimed that while he waited for his brother to send him money, his wife had ₦600,000 but did not provide financial assistance.
He lamented:
“I buy shawarma daily for my wife after work. I buy foodstuff ahead because my income isn’t stable and I never want us hungry. My daughter was in the hospital, I had no cash and was waiting for my brother to send money. My wife had ₦600k but couldn’t help.”
The man’s account has generated conversations online about financial responsibilities within marriage, particularly when couples face unexpected emergencies involving their children.
Some discussions have focused on whether spouses should be expected to support each other financially during difficult periods, while others have pointed to the importance of understanding each couple’s financial arrangements before judging the situation.
However, the man did not provide further details about why his wife allegedly declined to assist him or how the couple normally handles their finances.
