Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, has come under criticism after stating that truly unlimited data plans do not exist anywhere in the world unless customers are paying a very high price.
His remarks sparked reactions from Nigerians living abroad, many of whom disputed the claim by sharing screenshots of their own unlimited data subscriptions.
Speaking at a recent event, Toriola said: “The issue of unlimited data on mobile networks: it doesn’t exist anywhere in the world except if you’re paying a fortune. There’s a limit because you can never build enough capacity for everyone to be on an unlimited bundle, and you think you’ll provide a quality of service that is decent.”
Some residents overseas argued that unlimited data plans are readily available and affordable in countries such as the United Kingdom, claiming that the monthly cost of such packages is equivalent to only a few hours of work at minimum wage.
Several users took to social media to post evidence of their subscriptions, challenging Toriola’s assertion and fueling a broader debate about data pricing and internet access.
