A Nigerian woman has narrated how her cousin allegedly turned down a fully funded Bachelor’s degree scholarship in Computer Engineering in India because he was unwilling to risk his relationship with his girlfriend.
The story was shared on X by @kenkenlewu, who claimed that her cousin received the scholarship opportunity in 2020 while he was already in his third year of university.
According to her account, family members encouraged the young man to accept the scholarship and take advantage of the opportunity to study in India. However, his girlfriend allegedly opposed the idea of him travelling abroad and reportedly threatened to end their relationship if he accepted the scholarship.
Despite the advice from his family, the man reportedly decided to remain in Nigeria because of the relationship.
Explaining his decision at the time, he reportedly told his family:
“I can’t risk my relationship.”
Girlfriend Later Relocates to the UK
The X user said the couple remained together and eventually completed their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
However, their relationship reportedly took a different turn when the woman secured admission to pursue a master’s degree in the United Kingdom.
According to the narration, the man suggested that they explore the possibility of relocating together by applying for a dependent visa.
The woman, however, allegedly rejected the proposal and expressed her desire to begin a new chapter independently.
“I want to be alone over there and concentrate on my new life,” she reportedly told him.
The couple subsequently ended their relationship.
Woman Reportedly Marries Another Man
The woman who shared the story claimed that her cousin’s former girlfriend eventually married another man and now has two children.
Meanwhile, her cousin, who had reportedly declined the fully funded scholarship opportunity in India several years earlier, remained in Nigeria.
According to the X user’s account, he is currently engaged in POS business.
The story has since sparked discussions online about relationships, major career opportunities, personal decisions and the potential consequences of sacrificing long-term opportunities for romantic relationships.
