A man d!ed in Los Angeles on Friday, March 6, after severely injuring himself in an incident under investigation by police.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers received a call around 3:40 a.m. reporting that a man was self-harming in the city’s downtown area. When officers arrived, they erected a white tent to protect the body from public view while emergency personnel responded.

Blood was found on the sidewalk near the scene of the incident, according to video footage captured there. According to law enforcement sources, the man injured himself multiple times.

Authorities said the man cut off his genitalia, injured his throat and stabbed himself with a sharp object. Investigators also believe he attempted to sever one of his arms.

Officials have not yet determined what instrument was used or the circumstances that led to the incident. Police said the motive behind the act remains unknown and it is unclear whether the man was under the influence of drugs or experiencing a mental health crisis at the time.
