A man has opened up about the emotional and psychological struggles he has faced since his marriage ended just six months after his wedding.
The man, identified as Donna Winson on Facebook, said the separation left him devastated, battling depression, low self-esteem, weight loss and other health issues, adding that taking antidepressants did not ease his pain.
In a Facebook post, he recounted his failed attempts to save the marriage through family intervention, church support, prayers and appeals to his wife.
Recounting his experience, Winson described the pain of losing his marriage barely six months after the wedding, saying it affected him in ways he never imagined.
He also revealed that the emotional distress took a toll on his physical health and left him struggling with his self-esteem.
Read what he wrote below:
“It is bold to unveil the pain. I lost my marriage after only six months from the wedding day. It shattered me in ways I never imagined; pain that gnawed at my soul, depression that hollowed me out, even antidepressants didn’t help, weight loss that left me frail (low self esteem currently), emotional collapse, distress, sickness. Everything.”
The man explained that he sought help from various quarters in an attempt to resolve the marital crisis, but his efforts yielded no positive result.
According to him, involving family members, seeking support from the church and reaching out to people he trusted did not bring the outcome he hoped for.
He also disclosed that his attempts to communicate with his wife through emotional, logical and moral appeals were unsuccessful.
He wrote:
“As a man, I poured myself into every possible path: family engagement: silence. Church support: silence. Those I trusted to help: silence. Prayer: unanswered. Fasting: unanswered. Appeals of logic, of emotion, of ethics to my wife: unanswered. It’s sad we could not even sit to talk.
“And so I am left with one haunting question: What went wrong? Wasn’t this marriage God’s plan? Why did He allow us to wed? Could I have done right that I didn’t? Was it all a mistake? Was it about my worth after failing to find reaons for the separation?”
Winson further revealed that he recently travelled back home in another attempt to salvage the marriage, but his wife remained unwilling to reconcile.
He said the latest setback left him with no option but to return to work while still grappling with the pain of the separation.
He wrote:
“The burden is crushing. Even last week, I tried again. Flight back home to try mend the dying embers: the answer was still no. Now I have to drag myself on that aircraft back to work.”
The Facebook user described walking away from a marriage without knowing why it ended as an agonising experience, especially after all efforts to save the union had failed.
He however acknowledged that separation can sometimes become necessary, despite the emotional toll it takes on those involved.
He wrote:
“It is agonizing to walk away from devotion, from vows, from covenant, without ever knowing why. Yet it was necessary. To anyone enduring this storm: it is brutal, it is traumatic, but sometimes you have no choice. With tears streaming and pieces of yourself scattered, you must keep showing up until the darkness breaks.”
Winson also urged people not to mock or dismiss those going through marital crises, calling instead for compassion and prayers for struggling couples.
He asked people to remember him in their prayers as he navigates the emotional challenges following the collapse of his marriage.
He ended his post by expressing hope that he would eventually heal from the experience.
He wrote:
“To those who stand outside of it: this is not the moment to mock or dismiss. It is the moment to pray, because the enemy of love wages war against marriage. Pray for your unions, but above all, pray for me too as I stumble through this labyrinth of grief.
“We shall overcome. We shall rise again. Healing begins when we dare to speak, when we refuse to hide. Silence drained me; confession is the first breath of survival. I shall rise again. Feel how you want.”
