The death of Fuji-pop artist Afeez Adesina, also known as Destiny Boy, has sparked extensive discussion online, as his social media followers increased dramatically just hours after his death was reported.
Destiny Boy reportedly died at the age of 22 on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
The news of his death shocked fans and colleagues in the Nigerian music scene, with many going to social media to mourn the young singer.
His death was confirmed by Temilola Sobola, a popular Instagram investigative journalist. As at the time of writing, the reason of the singer’s death had not been officially confirmed.
While people mourned, focus swiftly moved to Destiny Boy’s Instagram page after an X user observed an unexpected increase in his followers.
Screenshots uploaded online showed that the artist earned over 200,000 new followers in the hours following his death.
Reacting to the development, the X user wrote:
“Destiny boy gained over 200k followers immediately after his deàth. Life just get as e be.”
The surprising increase in followers generated confusion and discussion among social media users.
Some questioned why the musician garnered so much attention only after his death, while others regarded it as a normal practice in which celebrities are praised only after their deaths.
