Alex Iwobi called his long-range goal in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur as “unique,” adding the style is difficult to imitate.
The midfielder scored Fulham’s second goal in the 34th minute, striking with a first-time shot from 25 yards following a swift exchange with Harry Wilson.
The ball hit the inside of the post before crossing the line, extending Fulham’s lead following Wilson’s early goal.
Iwobi reflected on the finish, recalling the execution and preparation that led to it.
“Unique. I don’t think anyone else opens up the hip and hits it like that. When the ball was set back, I only had one thought on my mind and I found the far corner. It’s something I do in training, so my team-mates aren’t surprised,” he said.
Tottenham narrowed the gap in the 66th minute through Richarlison, but were unable to tie the game, leaving head coach Igor Tudor with his second consecutive league defeat.
Despite the tight margin, Iwobi thought that Fulham was mostly in control.
“Another London derby; it’s always fantastic to play in front of our home crowd. We are happy to receive the results today.
“The result makes it appear close, but we thought we controlled the game and generated numerous opportunities. We didn’t take them, so it became a little wobbly in the end, but we finished well.”
The victory increases Fulham’s chances of qualifying for Europe, and Iwobi’s goal is certain to be mentioned in discussions about the league’s monthly goal award.
