“It’s more rampant than we think” – Lawyer raises awareness on paternity fraud, narrates case

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has expressed alarm about the growing frequency of paternity fraud, disclosing that he has handled numerous instances in a short period of time.

Effiong took to social media to reveal that he handled two distinct cases involving paternity fraud and marital adultery in the span of one week, with one of the cases already being heard in open court.

He recounted the emotional toll of the cases, telling how one of his clients broke down in tears when testifying about being duped by his wife over the paternity of a kid.

According to the lawyer, what made the issue worse was the woman’s alleged lack of remorse, as she purportedly blamed her husband for the fraud.

Drawing from his experience representing both men and women in matrimonial disputes, the lawyer warned that paternity fraud appears to be far more common than many people realise, urging greater awareness and honesty in relationships.

He added that another victim in a similar case also broke down emotionally while recounting his experience.

Effiong emphasised that the availability of DNA testing has become crucial in uncovering the truth in such situations, stressing that it has helped simplify what would otherwise remain hidden for years.
