President Bola Tinubu’s supporters have come under fire from Isaac Fayose for the rising price of gasoline, drawing comparisons between their response to the current price and the demonstrations that followed fuel price increases under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In a widely shared video, Fayose made the comments while asking why some Nigerians who had previously criticized Jonathan over gas prices are now standing up for Tinubu in spite of the increased cost of fuel.
He recalled that under Jonathan, gasoline sold for ₦98. He said that some Nigerians protested at the time and accused the former president of mismanaging the country’s finances.
“You bought fuel at 98 Naira, you came out to protest, you said Jonathan doesn’t have brain, that Jonathan does not know how to manage economy. Now you are buying the same fuel at 1,500 and you are calling the man, the current president, Tinubu, a builder. That means you are a fool.”
Fayose also voiced concerns about purported alterations to Abuja’s public gardens, asserting that some were being converted and purportedly sold to people with ties to the powerful.
“They seized so many gardens in Abuja, they were converting it to their names. They were selling it to their cronies. Everybody will come out, they don collect this garden, they don collect this one,” he said.
He went on to criticize what he called Nigerians’ silence about these developments, saying that people ought to voice their opinions when they think the government is acting improperly.
“But everybody will keep quiet the next day. Nobody is coming out to say, stop right there, you can’t do this to us. That mean say you be mumu.”
In closing, Fayose asked if Nigerians would keep quiet in spite of the economic difficulties and other problems he brought up.
