“In Nigeria, just have money” – Businessman shocked as friend orders VIP electricity

A Nigerian businessman has shared his experience on social media after witnessing a friend get an uninterrupted power supply in his region solely to amuse a visitor.

The anecdote was shared on X (previously Twitter) by @Ehmywealth, demonstrating how wealth and connections can provide access to services that are otherwise unattainable to most Nigerians.

The businessman stated that he has always wondered who controls electricity access amid Nigeria’s regular outages, where power supply is often unstable.

The unsettling event occurred when his acquaintance allegedly phoned a connection, known as a “plug,” to arrange for three hours of uninterrupted power.

Reflecting on the occasion, the businessman stated that money can grant access to premium or “VIP” services that are not available to the general population.

“I used to wonder who was behind the NEPA switch. Then a friend called his plug to order 3 hours of light in the area just because he had a visitor. I just sat there in shock. In this Nigeria, just have money. There is a VIP version of everything.”

Social media users responded to the post immediately, expressing amazement, humour, and disbelief.

Many drew attention to the sharp contrast between the pleasures that money can provide and the everyday struggles of Nigerians who frequently experience power outages.
