A Nigerian woman has generated outrage online after criticising trainers who require students to perform chores in exchange for a talent.
She expressed her dissatisfaction, emphasising that paying for training should not come with additional tasks unrelated to learning. She referred to such behaviours as unjust and disrespectful.
Read what she said below:
“If someone is paying you money to learn a skill, you’re not their madam. You’re their teacher.
If you say a price for your training and I pay that price in full, and you expect me to come to your shop by 7am to open and clean it for you, you are very mad.”
Her statement rang true for many Nigerians who have been required to perform extra work in addition to their regular classes.
Social media users responded fast, offering their own stories.
One wrote, “Finally, someone said it! Teachers are not supposed to use learners as helpers.” Another added, “If you pay for a course, focus on learning, not cleaning someone’s shop.”
The viral article sparked discussions on preserving professional boundaries in training, with many urging trainers to treat paying students with respect.
