A man has sparked heated debate online after expressing his displeasure with the thought of women practicing polyandry, a hypothetical scenario in which a woman may have more than one husband, similar to polygamous practices permitted for some males.
The statement, which appeared on social media on Sunday, May 18, 2026, swiftly spread as users argued gender roles, cultural expectations, and the institution of marriage in modern Nigeria and beyond.
The man stated that the concept of emotionally sharing a wife or hearing her show fondness for another partner disturbed him, and that he would struggle to deal in such a situation.
“If Nigerian women start marrying two husbands like the men, I don’t think I can cope. Imagine passing our wife’s room and hear her screaming ‘oh daddy you are so sweet, I wish it’s your turn everyday, I will soon send that useless man away,’ I fit die,” he said.
The statement elicited conflicting reactions online, with some users finding it amusing and others seeing it as a reflection of double standards in conversations about polygamy.
Similar conversations have resurfaced since 2022, when talks over gender equality in marriage gained traction on Nigerian social media sites.
