A Nigerian woman identified as @tessysmitha on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked online discussions after recounting how her cousin was allegedly blocked by her boyfriend following a ₦500,000 request for a wig.
According to the X user, her cousin had asked her boyfriend to buy her a wig worth ₦500,000. However, the man reportedly explained that he could not afford the purchase because he was financially committed to a project at the time.
The woman disclosed that her cousin eventually bought the wig herself and shared photos of it on social media with the caption, “If he wanted to, he would.”
However, the post allegedly did not go down well with her boyfriend, who reportedly blocked her after seeing the caption.
Reacting to the incident, @tessysmitha argued that people are entitled to their financial priorities but should not resent their partners for receiving gifts or assistance from others.
She wrote:
“You are allowed to have financial priorities but you don’t get to dictate what another person can do for your woman. Your inability or unwillingness to buy something shouldn’t become a reason to resent her for receiving it elsewhere.”
The account has since generated mixed reactions, with social media users debating whether the boyfriend was justified in his reaction and whether spending ₦500,000 on a wig was reasonable.
One user, Kelvin, dismissed the story, writing, “You won’t rage bait me this morning. I rebuke you.”
Dorcas Sandy questioned the circumstances surrounding the purchase, asking whether someone had simply given the cousin ₦500,000 without expecting anything in return.
Dennis Chrisy, on the other hand, criticised the alleged request, describing it as a case of misplaced priorities.
Another user, Aura Dinoh, appeared to support the boyfriend’s decision to block her, jokingly offering to donate more cement to help him maintain the block.
The incident has continued to generate conversations about financial expectations in relationships, expensive gifts and the meaning of the phrase, “If he wanted to, he would.”
