According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Friday, January 30, 2026, the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his membership of the Labour Party, while acknowledging the unpredictability of political developments.
Speaking on Thursday during the January 2026 edition of his monthly media interaction, Otti emphasized that he remains committed to the party for now.
Governor Otti noted that despite his current allegiance, political dynamics can change quickly. He stressed that while he is still a member of the Labour Party today, no one can predict what might happen in the future.
He said: “We are not in election period. If election comes, we will still run under the Labour Party, but nobody knows tomorrow. But today, I am still in the Labour Party.”
Otti also addressed issues surrounding his decision to operate from his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South LGA, rather than the state Government House. He indicated that he is prepared to face any legal challenges that might arise from this choice.
The governor explained that his lawyers are ready to defend him in any law court, underlining his willingness to comply with legal procedures and respond to any lawsuit.
He added that the choice to work from his country home was made in the interest of governance and personal convenience, without any intention to undermine the authority of the state Government House.
Otti’s statement comes amid discussions by former governors who have reportedly considered taking legal action against him for not residing in the official state residence.
Despite these potential challenges, Otti maintained a calm stance, suggesting that the situation is manageable through proper legal channels and that he has confidence in his legal team.
The governor’s comments reflect a balance between political loyalty and pragmatic acknowledgment of possible future shifts, highlighting his awareness of the complexities of state and party politics.
