“I was dating other women, even my husband was dating other women” – Prof Uju Anya on why her marriage failed

Uju Anya, a Nigerian-American academic, has been open about her prior marriage, sexuality, and life experiences. She has insisted that her marriage to her ex-husband was sincere, purposeful, and founded on true love.

Dr. Anya disclosed in an interview on With Chude that her upbringing in a severely disturbed household influenced her early years. She described her father as a womaniser who publicly humiliated her mother, mistreated her physically, and neglected her emotionally.

She said that her mother’s divorce when she was only ten years old left her emotionally damaged and without love for a long time.

She claims that these early encounters had a significant impact on her outlook. She adopted feminism after moving to the US and eventually converted to atheism, which she claims she has held for many years.

Dr. Anya stated that she fell profoundly in love with a guy and married him despite identifying as bisexual, emphasising that it was not a “fake marriage” or a cover.

She clarified that at the time, she was totally dedicated to the relationship, emotionally invested in him, and physically attracted to him.

When I met my ex-husband, I liked him. He was hot, he could dance, he was funny. I felt sexual attraction, and I held on to him tightly because this felt like my passport to a normal life,” she said.

She continued by saying that although the marriage was emotionally and sexually satisfying, she eventually recognised that she was more attracted to women. She told her husband that she needed to be with ladies after ten years of marriage.

She claimed that although both of them dated other people, the arrangement only held the marriage together for a few more years until the pair mutually decided to open the marriage.

“That held me maybe another four years,” she said.

She disclosed that going to a Nigerian lesbian wedding in New York marked a significant turning point in her life and gave her clarity.

“My marriage was over at that point. I knew this was my future. I needed to go,” she said.

Dr. Anya also talked about the criticism she receives on a regular basis, especially being called a “man-hater.” She denied the accusation, saying that although she has been genuinely attracted to men, she has always had a greater affection for women.

She also discussed the severe criticism she has received in recent years, including threats of murder, for publicly denouncing the late Queen Elizabeth and bringing up the plight of Biafrans.

She claims that the situation got so bad that she had to call the FBI and the police, and it had a serious negative impact on her mental health.

Dr. Anya wed Dr. Syria Lang, her longtime lover, in 2024. She referred to her as her ideal partner and claimed that their relationship went beyond marriage because they integrated their families.
