After describing how she misplaced her recently purchased iPhone XR in broad daylight years ago, a Nigerian woman sparked controversy on social media.
She clarified that the incident occurred at Ikorodu Garage while she was accompanying her mother to Oshodi market in a widely shared video on X (formerly Twitter).
She claims that while she was browsing through her phone while sitting under a canopy, a man nearby asked to borrow it, saying he needed to make an urgent call because his own phone was d£ad.
She claimed that after telling him she didn’t have any airtime, he promptly produced a ₦200 MTN recharge card and offered to load it himself. She gave her phone to him because she trusted him.
Moments later, while pretending to make the call, the man slowly walked away.
When she eventually stood up out of suspicion, the stranger suddenly took to his heels and disappeared with her device.
The incident sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing shock, sympathy, and frustration over how common such scams have become.
Some social media users shared similar experiences, warning others never to hand over their phones to strangers, no matter how convincing they may sound.
A commentator wrote, “This was exactly how they almost collected my phone at Ojota. If not for someone shouting, I for don cry today.” Another said, “Being nice in Lagos will humble you. Learn to say no.”
The lady admitted she learned the hard way and hopes her experience will serve as a cautionary tale to others.
