A Nigerian man has reportedly been left shocked after discovering that his younger brother dropped out of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in his third year without informing him, despite receiving financial support from him following their father’s d3ath.
The incident was shared by a neighbour, who explained that the elder brother, being the first son of the family, had taken responsibility for supporting his younger sibling’s education after their father passed away.
Having invested in his brother’s schooling, the man reportedly expected him to complete his degree and proceed to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
However, after graduation was expected, the younger brother reportedly declined to register for NYSC, saying he was not interested in participating. His elder brother subsequently allowed him to make his own decision.
Two years later, the younger brother was reportedly still at home without a job, prompting his elder brother to offer assistance once again by helping him look for employment.
As part of the process, the elder brother asked him to provide his academic credentials.
It was reportedly during this conversation that he discovered his younger brother had dropped out of UNIPORT at the 300-level without telling him.
The revelation meant that the younger brother had not completed the degree programme his elder sibling believed he had been supporting him through.
The account did not reveal why the younger brother left the university or whether he had explained the circumstances to his elder brother following the discovery.
The incident has drawn attention to the sacrifices family members sometimes make to support their relatives, particularly when an older sibling assumes financial responsibilities following the death of a parent.
It also highlights the importance of honesty and communication among family members, especially when one sibling has invested significant resources in another’s education and future.
Although the reasons behind the younger brother’s decision remain unknown, the reported discovery could be a painful experience for an elder brother who had hoped his support would help his sibling complete his university education and build a career.
