According to a report by Channels TV on September 3, 2026, Nigerian comedian, writer, actor and occasional director, Bovi, has revealed that he rejected several acting offers during the early stages of his career because he did not want to be restricted to a particular type of character.

Bovi explained that many of the roles offered to him were based on the character he played in the popular Nigerian comedy series, ‘Extended Family’. Rather than accepting roles that he believed would limit his opportunities as an actor, he decided to turn them down because he was confident that he had more to offer.

The comedian, who began his career as an actor and creator of ‘Extended Family’, which premiered in 2007, made the revelation while appearing as a guest on the CreativiTea podcast.

According to Bovi, the success of his character in the comedy series made some filmmakers associate him with a particular personality, leading to offers that were largely similar to the role he had already played.

He explained that the character was portrayed as a typical rustic ‘Warri boy’, and this influenced the kinds of acting opportunities that came his way in Nollywood.

Bovi said he began receiving offers for roles that either required him to reproduce the same character or portray a gatekeeper and other passive characters. However, he declined such opportunities because he believed accepting them could prevent audiences and filmmakers from seeing his wider abilities.

He said, “We all stood out in our different ways, and because my character was playing that typical warri boy, the rustic village one. I started to get offers in Nollywood, but they were all tied to either being like that character, or a gate man, you know, or a passive role, and I turned all of them down.”

Bovi noted that he was conscious of the importance of avoiding typecasting, particularly at a stage when he was still establishing himself in the entertainment industry.

His decision to reject those roles reflected his desire to build a career that would allow him to demonstrate his versatility rather than remain associated with one particular character.

The entertainer has since developed a career spanning comedy, acting, writing and directing, establishing himself as one of the recognisable figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

His experience also highlights the challenges actors can face when a character becomes strongly associated with their public image. While a successful role can create opportunities, it can also influence the kinds of characters performers are offered.

For Bovi, turning down roles that did not align with his ambitions was a deliberate decision to ensure that his career was not defined by a single character.
