A young Nigerian woman who got married as a teenager has revealed that she personally transferred her bride price back to her estranged husband after he allegedly refused to accept it from her family.

Ugwu Tessy reportedly got married in 2020 and is now 23 years old, meaning she was about 17 when she got married.

She had three children during the marriage before the relationship eventually ended.

Woman says she struggled to move on

According to Tessy, her estranged husband refused to collect the bride price when her kinsmen and parents attempted to return it after the marriage ended.

She explained that this reportedly left her traditionally connected to her former husband, making it difficult for her to move on.

Tessy, who is now in a new relationship, took to Facebook on September 9, 2026, to share a screenshot showing a bank transfer which she said was her personal effort to return the bride price.

“I Single-Handedly Returned it Myself”

In the narration attached to the bank transfer, Tessy identified herself as the former wife of Ejike Tobias Ugwuoke and stated that she had returned the bride price that was paid on her behalf during their marriage.

She wrote:

“I Ugwu Nnenna Theresa Ex-wife of Ejike Tobias Ugwuoke. Have Single-handedly returned the Bride Price he paid on my Head on 2/1/2020 which he Rejected to Collect From My Umunna & Parents & The laws. I Single-HANDEDLY Returned it Myself Today Being 9/9/2026.”

The development has attracted attention online, with social media users discussing traditional marriage customs, the return of bride price after separation and the challenges that can arise when couples end marriages under customary traditions.
