One of the abducted students’ parents has made an anguished plea to the authorities for immediate action to ensure their children’s release.
The bereaved mother described how she had dressed her daughter for school that morning and was cooking at home when armed bandits attacked the village and began shooting in Oyo State.
Speaking emotionally in a viral video, she said:
“I bathed my child and sent her to school. I was in the kitchen cooking so she would have something to eat when she returned, when I suddenly saw bandits entering our town and they started shooting.”
According to her, she hid for protection throughout the attack and watched helplessly as the attackers gathered her child and other students from the Oriire community.
The mother, who claimed to be originally from Benin Republic, revealed that she moved to Nigeria to work and offer a better future for her children following the loss of their father.
“I am begging the government. I came here to work as a merchant so I can take care of my children, hoping they will also take care of me when I am old.
Their father is late. I am in Yawata working as a trader to support her. The government is trying, but they should please help us bring our child back alive,” she added.
The mother’s sorrowful appeal generated emotive reactions online, with many Nigerians urging authorities to step up attempts to rescue the abducted pupils.
The abduction occurred in the Oriire town of Oyo State, and the principal, instructors, and approximately 46 kids are apparently still in captivity, causing widespread alarm as families await their safe return.
