“I made a terrible mistake” — Man cries out as landlord serves quit notice

A tenant in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is facing eviction for failing to renew his 1.5 million two-bedroom flat. He regrets picking a larger home than he could afford.

The vacate notice was given this week, following months of unpaid rent and repeated warnings from the landlord.

The predicament reflects a growing rent burden in several parts of the city, particularly since late 2025, when housing costs began to rise dramatically throughout numerous estates.

The tenant claimed he erred by upgrading from a smaller self-contained apartment to a two-bedroom flat when he signed the contract last year.

He added that at the time, it appeared doable, but inflation and growing living costs in 2026 made it difficult to keep up payments. He is currently looking for other housing and seeking assistance from relatives and friends.

I made a terrible mistake and now I’m regretting it. My house rent is due, and I’ve been served a quit notice. When I wanted to rent this apartment, I should have rented a one-bedroom flat or self-contained. I insisted on a two-bedroom apartment, and now I can’t pay ₦1.5 million to renew it,” he said.

A local property agent stated that similar situations have become increasingly regular since 2025, as many tenants exceed their income level in competitive neighbourhoods.
