A guy has stirred an internet discourse after sharing his experience with a neighbour who he claims took advantage of his kindness for over a year without reciprocating.
In a now-viral article, the guy claimed that when he first moved into his home, he voluntarily connected his neighbour to his generator, giving him access to electricity anytime he powered it.
According to him, the act was given out of kindness because the neighbour had never sought the arrangement.
“Anytime I put on my generator, I’ll call him so he can switch his changeover and use light. He never asked, I just did it out of goodwill,” he said.
However, the arrangement gradually became expected. The man saw that the neighbour began to interrogate him whenever the generator was not operating, despite never donating fuel or offering any form of assistance.
He was frustrated that, despite providing energy for almost a year, the neighbour never provided “even one litre of fuel.”
The problem exacerbated during a period when he was unable to run the generator on a regular basis due to budgetary restrictions.
According to him, the neighbor’s reaction at the time was contemptuous.“This one wey you never on gen for weeks, e really touch you,” the neighbour reportedly said, a comment the man described as insensitive.
The situation changed when a new flatmate moved into the building. The man stated that the new occupant began giving fuel voluntarily, providing up to 15 litres within a short period of moving in.
The opposing practices have spurred reactions online, with many Nigerians emphasising the value of thankfulness and reciprocity, while others cautioned against unrestrained generosity, which could lead to entitlement.
