“I can’t date my junior…” — Man shares how he turned down the girl he liked

A Nigerian postgraduate student described how an old romantic rejection from his bachelor days was reopened by a roadside encounter in Lagos after a Sunday church session.

The man claimed that the encounter happened earlier this month when he suddenly ran across a woman who had rejected his advances years prior due to the fact that he was her junior in college.

He claims that the encounter brought back memories of his time in 200 level, when she was a final-year student and refused to date him due to academic rank.

He claimed that she had progressed both intellectually and emotionally by the time he finished his degree.

The man clarified that rather than being based on incompatibility, the initial rejection was framed around timing and perceived academic rank.

Read his words below;

“She told me she liked me but said I needed to graduate first. She made it clear she couldn’t date a junior coursemate, so I respected her decision and moved on quietly.”

He claimed that when she received her master’s degree, their communication decreased and they eventually lost touch.

The event happened while he was driving home from church years later. He claimed that the woman seemed taken aback by his advancement and muttered something that made him uneasy.

“She looked at me and said, ‘You’re a big boy now. I think I can consider you.’ I smiled and told her I wasn’t done with my master’s yet.”

In 2022, social media debates questioned whether dating choices in Nigeria should be influenced by educational hierarchy, which led to a widespread resurgence of public discussions about academic status and relationship suitability.

Since then, the man’s story has generated conflicting opinions on the internet. While some readers see it as a lesson in self-worth and timing, others see it as an illustration of how romantic expectations in Nigerian society are still shaped by social position.
