“I burst into tears…” – Lady cries out after landlord allegedly increased annual rent from ₦8m to ₦14.5m

A lady has sparked reactions online after expressing frustration over the rising cost of rent in Lagos, revealing that she broke down in tears after her landlord allegedly increased her annual rent from ₦8 million to ₦14.5 million.

Sharing her experience in a viral video posted on X (formerly Twitter), she said the development highlights the growing economic challenges facing many Nigerians and urged people not to wait until they are personally affected before speaking out.

In her words:

“I’ve been crying since yesterday. I was already paying ₦8 million yearly, with two years’ rent upfront and extra charges, before my landlord increased it again.”

The lady said she was devastated after receiving notice of the latest rent increase despite the current economic realities in the country.

She also questioned what the Lagos State Government is doing to address the continuous rise in housing costs and protect tenants from excessive rent hikes.

“Recently, my landlord increased the rent from ₦8 million to ₦14.5 million per year, and I burst into tears. This is why I keep saying people shouldn’t wait until the economy affects them before speaking up, because it will eventually affect everyone.

“There is flooding everywhere, and now housing costs are becoming unbearable. What is the Lagos State Government doing about landlords and the rising cost of rent?” she added.

Her video has generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences, while others pointed to inflation, rising property costs, and broader economic challenges as factors driving the increase.

The incident has reignited discussions about housing affordability in Lagos as residents continue to grapple with the rising cost of living.
