“I asked him to come with his plate” – Lady recounts gateman’s complaint over Easter rice gesture

A lady described an incident involving her gateman after she asked him to come and collect Easter rice on his own plate due to a paucity of takeaway boxes.

The episode, which she shared on social media, triggered household debates about boundaries, perception, and social etiquette.

She added that it is a regular practice for her to provide food to her gatekeeper during holiday seasons.

However, one case took a different route when the recipient misinterpreted the request to bring a plate, resulting in a complaint from a neighbour.

She later learned that the gateman was angered by the instruction, arguing it was insulting to ask a married man to bring a dish, comparing the gesture to begging.

Yesterday, I texted our gateman to come and collect his Easter rice. I told him to come with his plate because I had run out of takeaway packs. He replied, ‘Don’t worry ma’. I was shocked when my neighbour later told me he reported me, saying I disrespected him. It was never my intention to make him feel small. I genuinely thought I was still being kind by sharing what I had,” she said.

The scenario has elicited diverse comments online, with some users praising her aims and others emphasising the value of cultural sensitivity in acts of gifting.

Similar errors have been recorded in previous years, especially during the holiday season, when charitable deeds might be understood differently based on context and perspective.
