“He Told Me to Return to My Parents” — Nursing Mother Seeks Divorce, ₦10,000 Monthly Upkeep for Baby

A nursing mother, Firdausi Ahmad, has approached a Shari’a Court in Kaduna State seeking to end her three-year marriage to her husband, Malam Anas, over an alleged marital disagreement.

The woman, through her lawyer, Sani Sunusi, also asked the court to order her husband to pay ₦10,000 monthly for the maintenance of their eight-month-old daughter.

Husband Allegedly Abandons Wife and Baby

Speaking before the court on Thursday, Sunusi explained that the marriage had produced a daughter who is currently eight months old.

He alleged that the disagreement began when Anas instructed Ahmad to leave their matrimonial home and return to her parents until he permitted her to come back.

The lawyer further claimed that since she left, the husband had neither visited her nor made enquiries about the welfare of their daughter.

Woman Requests Breastfeeding Allowance

In addition to seeking the dissolution of the marriage, Ahmad requested monthly financial support of ₦10,000 for her daughter.

She also asked the court to grant her financial assistance for the eight months she had spent breastfeeding the child.

The matter has brought attention to issues surrounding marital responsibilities, child maintenance and the financial obligations of husbands towards their wives and children following separation.

The husband’s response to the allegations and the court’s decision were not included in the report.
