A Nigerian man identified as @Zaddy-of-Lagos on X has recounted an unexpected encounter with Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during a flight to Owerri.

According to the man, he initially had no idea that he was speaking with the former Anambra State governor because Obi had his face covered with a COVID-19 mask.

‘I Didn’t Know I Was Speaking With Peter Obi’

The man said he boarded the flight in economy class and got into a conversation with the politician without recognising him.

During their interaction, they reportedly discussed his work at a bank, with the man only discovering the identity of his fellow passenger after Obi removed his mask briefly to drink water.

The revelation reportedly left him stunned.

Peter Obi Refuses Help With His Bag

According to @Zaddy-of-Lagos, the encounter continued after the aircraft landed in Owerri.

He said some people initially mistook him for one of Obi’s aides, possibly because of his outfit.

However, he explained that Obi did not allow him or anyone else to carry his nylon bag. Instead, the politician personally held his belongings before walking to his Prado vehicle.

He wrote:

«“He continued to refuse to let me or anyone hold his carryon bag, walked to his Prado and they drove off. As he drove off, I silently prayed for his safety cause I couldn’t understand how a former VP candidate at the time was so humble.”»

The experience reportedly left a strong impression on the man, who described Obi’s conduct as an example of humility.

His account has since generated reactions online, with some users discussing the politician’s reported simplicity and approach to personal belongings despite his political status.
