Drama is unfolding in Anambra State following the arrest of a popular Nnewi-based native doctor, known as Aka Mmuo Mmiri, also called De Young Chief Priest or Mmuo Mmili Afulu Anya.
The traditionalist, whose real name is believed to be Johnpaul Ezenagu, was recently arrested by the State security outfit Agunechemba Security Outfit as part of the government’s ongoing crackdown on suspected ritualists.
Security operatives reportedly raided his residence and later took him to a river believed to be his shrine. Authorities accuse him of carrying out illegal spiritual activities, including performing rituals for internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, and allegedly providing fake currency and other charms believed to aid criminal activities.
However, the arrested native doctor has strongly denied the allegations.
Speaking during his parade, Aka Mmuo Mmiri insisted he is a legitimate traditional practitioner and not involved in any criminal activity. According to him, he is properly registered and licensed by the State.
“I have the registration and license issued to traditionalists in Anambra State, even before the current law introduced by the Governor,” he said.
He also claimed his reputation in the Nnewi community speaks for itself.
“If I were involved in crime, the people of Nnewi would have chased me away long ago. The community does not support evil,” he added.
To further defend himself, he revealed that surveillance cameras were installed both inside and outside his residence to monitor activities around his home.
“I don’t harbor criminals and I have no dealings with them,” he stated.
The native doctor also sparked controversy with a bold statement during his defense, claiming that some religious leaders are responsible for even greater deception.
“There are many churches and fake pastors committing more crimes and deceiving people in Anambra State,” he said.
His remarks have triggered intense debate online, especially as the administration of Charles Soludo continues its aggressive campaign to rid the State of criminal elements through the Anambra Homeland Security Law and operations carried out by the Agunechemba security team.
In recent weeks, several native doctors have been arrested for allegedly assisting criminals with charms, rituals, and other spiritual practices believed to encourage fraud and violence.
However, critics argue that the crackdown appears to focus mainly on traditionalists while ignoring alleged fraudulent activities in some religious circles, including fake miracles, the sale of “anointed” items such as olive oil and healing water, and prophecies promising quick wealth to desperate followers.
The case has continued to stir public reactions as authorities maintain their investigation into the activities of the arrested traditionalist.
