Ex-Bafana captain questions Uche Ikpeazu’s decision to choose Uganda over Nigeria

Bongani Khumalo, a former captain of Bafana Bafana, expressed surprise at Uche Ikpeazu’s choice to dedicate his international career to Uganda instead of pursuing a spot in Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Before making a cap-tying appearance for the Cranes in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Mozambique in September 2025, London-born Ikpeazu was qualified to represent Nigeria, England, and Uganda.

His choice essentially ended his chances of playing for the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation had been keeping an eye on Ikpeazu for a while.

Expectations of a future senior call-up were heightened when former Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia invited him to a Nigeria U23 training camp in December 2014.

It was believed that Nigeria was his top choice, but despite persistent interest, a senior opportunity never materialised.

Ikpeazu was also persuaded to commit to Nigeria by former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo, who played with him at Watford.

Nevertheless, the St Johnstone forward decided to embrace Uganda’s strategy since he was running out of time.

Ikpeazu’s teammate at Doncaster Rovers, Khumalo, acknowledged that he did not anticipate the striker selecting Uganda.

“I actually was with him at Doncaster Rovers when he was a youngster and I remember speaking to him, Nigerian and Uganda parents,” Khumalo said on SuperSport. “So I’m quite surprised that he obviously turned out for Uganda because I thought he would have definitely pushed for Nigeria.”

When Uganda plays the Super Eagles in their final group game at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Ikpeazu focuses on a high-profile reunion with Nigeria.

The 30-year-old has already established himself in the competition, scoring in just four minutes during his AFCON debut as Uganda overcame a deficit to draw 1-1 with Tanzania.

When the striker takes on the country he once aspired to represent, all eyes will be on him.
