DStv Stream Cuts Nine Channels as Nigeria’s New FreeTV Unveils Over 100 Free Stations

Nigeria’s television landscape is witnessing a major shift as MultiChoice’s DStv Stream has reportedly reduced its free streaming offering from 13 channels to just four, removing nine previously available channels from its no-subscription lineup. The remaining free channels are said to be SuperSport Schools, SuperSport Play, Channel O, and TBN Africa.

The development comes as the Federal Government officially launched FreeTV, a new digital television platform designed to provide Nigerians with access to more than 100 free-to-air channels without monthly subscription fees. The service forms part of Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme and offers a mix of news, sports, movies, music, educational content, children’s programming, and indigenous language channels.

According to government officials, FreeTV is intended to expand access to digital broadcasting across the country and reduce barriers to television access. The platform can be accessed through compatible digital television equipment and is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.

The timing of DStv Stream’s channel reduction and the rollout of FreeTV has sparked discussions among viewers, with many Nigerians comparing subscription-based television services to the government’s new free alternative. As competition in the broadcasting sector increases, consumers now have more viewing options than ever before.
