Drama as NYSC corper contributes ₦2,000 for principal’s retirement party, gets no food but washes plates

A corps member serving in a secondary school in Nasarawa State has narrated how she contributed ₦2,000 for her principal’s retirement send-off, yet was left without food at the event.

In her account, she described the treatment she and other junior teachers allegedly received during the celebration.

She said the school principal had asked every teacher to contribute ₦2,000 each to organise the send-off for the retiring senior staff member.

She explained that she paid because she did not want any trouble with the school management.

According to her, the school organised a celebration with jollof rice and a large cake.

However, she claimed the food finished before it got to the junior teachers, who were left outside under the sun while the senior teachers ate inside the staff room.

She added that instead of being served food, the junior teachers were later asked to wash the plates and arrange the chairs after the celebration.

The incident reportedly left her upset, especially since she had contributed money to the event but did not get a share of the meal.

She later discussed what happened with a friend serving in the same school.

The colleague reportedly told her that such treatment happens every year and advised her not to contribute next time.

She quoted her as saying, “She said next time I should just tell them I don’t have money.”

Wrapping up her story, the corps member wrote, “I have learnt my lesson.”

Her experience has raised concerns about how junior staff and corps members are treated during workplace celebrations, especially when they are asked to contribute financially.
