“Don’t shrink yourself” – Lady advises women who earn more than their partners, sparking online reactions

A Nigerian woman has sent a forceful message to women who earn more than the men they date or marry, encouraging them to stop shrinking themselves or apologetic for their success.

According to her, women should unlearn the behaviour passed down from previous generations of concealing financial independence to protect a man’s ego.

Read what she said below:

“Don’t make the mistake of shrinking yourself like our mothers did. It is not your fault you earn more, and it should never matter.”

She counselled women, particularly in public settings, to feel secure about their financial contributions.

In order to “feel like the man,” she advised women to use their cards to pay when they go out rather than feeling compelled to let their spouses pay.

She emphasised that a woman paying does not diminish her partner’s manhood, nor does letting a guy pay imply surrender.

The woman also discussed the need of honesty in the household, especially with regard to children.

Instead of acting as though their husbands cover all expenses, she encouraged women to take responsibility for their own work.

“If both of you contribute, let your children know. Teach them teamwork and shared responsibility,” she added.

Online discussions have been triggered by her statement, with many women praising her candour and urging others to embrace their financial independence guilt-free.

She ended by emphasising that there is nothing wrong with women providing for their families.
