Democrats Call for Ban on Artificial Superintelligence in the US

According to a report by Fox News on Friday, November 6, 2026, Democrats in the United States are calling for stricter regulations on artificial intelligence, including a proposed ban on artificial superintelligence.

The renewed push follows remarks by Democratic Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, who urged her party to make restrictions on advanced artificial intelligence a major priority following the November 3 midterm elections.

In a post on X on November 4, Ansari called for a temporary pause on advanced AI development, stronger regulation of the technology industry and an outright ban on artificial superintelligence.

“Top of the Democratic agenda on day 1 needs to be a pause on advanced AI development, regulation of this out of control industry, and a ban on artificial superintelligence,” she wrote.

The proposal is connected to the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act of 2026, introduced by Democratic lawmakers, including Representative Greg Casar and Senator Bernie Sanders.

The proposed legislation seeks to permanently prohibit the development and deployment of artificial superintelligence while temporarily pausing the development of advanced AI systems until federal safety regulations are established.

It also proposes creating a new Department of Artificial Intelligence to oversee the industry and enforce safety requirements. Violations of certain provisions could attract significant penalties, including up to 20 years in prison.

However, the proposed legislation has not become law. Its House and Senate versions remain at the early stages of the legislative process.

The development has renewed debate in Washington over how the United States should balance technological innovation, economic competition and concerns about the potential risks of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.
