Charly Boy, also known as Area Fada, a veteran singer and activist, has chimed in on the ongoing discussion comparing Afrobeats artist Wizkid to the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Remember that the analogy began when Seun Kuti chastised Wizkid’s fans for proclaiming the afrobeats musician as the next Fela.
However, Wizkid, who berated him, claimed that he is greater than his father, the renowned Fela Kuti.
Charly Boy took to his X (previously Twitter) name to dismiss the parallel as misguided, claiming that such arguments sometimes stem from a lack of depth and historical knowledge.
He noted that, whereas younger people may debate primarily on status and renown, elders tend to consider impact and content.
In his article, Charly Boy emphasised the opposing legacies of both artists, stating that Wizkid represents modern stardom, global recognition, economic success, and entertainment, but Fela represented resistance, truth, and social conscience.
Charly Boy emphasised that comparing the two is pointless because they lived in different eras and fought different wars.
He compared them to fire and water, claiming that while they are both powerful in their own ways, they cannot be measured using the same yardstick. He went on to say that greatness should not be measured by who is “bigger,” but by who has the greatest impact on the soul.
Read his words below…
“Wiz and Fela.
“Who Big Pass?”
Small boys go write/talk like small boys.
Elders go make you think.
Wizkid dey sing for crowd,
stadium full, light dey flash,
money dey talk, awards dey stack,
world dey shout: Starboy!
Fela no need spotlight,
him own be fire for chest,
kalakuta be him stage,
truth be him microphone.
Wizkid dey make dem dance,
make pain small, make joy flow,
Fela dey make dem think,
make fear run, make mind wake.
One dey rule charts,
one rule conscience.
One dey give sweet escape,
one dey give hard reality.
So who big pass?
Na who you dey measure am by.
If na fame and cruise — Wizkid.
If na fight and freedom — Fela.
But hear me well, my people:
River and fire no dey compete.
One cool your body,
one burn your chain.
Different time, different battle,
different kind of greatness.
No be who big pass…
Na who touch your soul pass. 🎶🔥
Na him Fada wan Know jare”
