Abia South senator Eyinnaya Abaribe has officially left the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). On Wednesday, the congressman declared his defection, ending weeks of conjecture about his future in politics.

His choice comes after protracted internal disputes within APGA. Abaribe claimed that his fundamental disagreements with the party’s leadership and direction prevented him from staying in the organisation.

He said that numerous attempts to address the problems inside were unsuccessful.

He clarified that the ADC provided a more transparent platform that is consistent with his values and dedication to democratic accountability. The senator stated that extensive discussions with residents and political associates led to his decision.

“After wide consultations, I have taken the decision to formally resign from APGA and align with the African Democratic Congress, which provides a clearer vision for good governance and national renewal,” Abaribe said.

Prior to the general election in 2027, the senator emphasised the necessity of having a powerful and moral opposition that can provide Nigerians with a reliable option.

After months of tense ties over internal party democracy, candidate selection procedures, and purported marginalisation of important stakeholders, he left APGA.

Abaribe had openly denounced the party’s leadership for acting unilaterally and failing to reach a consensus.

According to sources, he was also involved in disagreements on APGA’s political strategy in Abia State, specifically regarding alliances and the party’s stance towards the ruling party, which he allegedly believed compromised the organization’s core principles.

One of APGA’s most well-known national figures is Abaribe, a former deputy governor of Abia State.

As 2027 preparations pick up steam, his defection is anticipated to have political ramifications in Abia South and elsewhere.
