BREAKING: Again, Rivers Assembly begins impeachment process against Governor Fubara

On Thursday, the Rivers State House of Assembly formally began impeachment procedures against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, on claims of severe misconduct, adding to the state’s mounting political crisis.

The action, revealed during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, is regarded as one of the most significant measures yet in the long-running power struggle in the oil-rich state.

During the session, lawmakers presented a formal notice describing alleged acts of misbehaviour against both the governor and his deputy.

The impeachment attempt is the latest episode in the acrimonious feud between Governor Fubara and political forces loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

The issue has polarised the state’s political scene, with the House of Assembly being perceived as dominated by MPs who support Wike.

By invoking relevant articles of the Constitution, the Assembly initiated a process that could result in the governor and his deputy being removed if the legal requirements are satisfied.

According to constitutional rules, an impeachment can only succeed if it is supported by at least two-thirds of the legislature.

Political analysts and civil society organisations have raised alarm over the move, warning that it may exacerbate tensions and undermine governance in Rivers State.

They cite prior impeachment attempts in the state, which frequently led in street riots, political unrest, and lengthy court battles.

The growing scenario has also aroused concerns about the potential impact on the state’s economy and public administration, since ambiguity surrounds the relationship between the executive and legislative branches of government.
