A Nigerian man has stirred emotions online after recounting how an unexpected encounter with his former secondary school teacher left him in tears while working as a commercial motorcycle rider in Ibadan.
According to him, his former class and English teacher, Mrs. Togbe, was known for her strict discipline and unwavering commitment to ensuring her students succeeded academically. He recalled that she constantly encouraged them to pursue higher education and warned against dropping out of school.
Reflecting on one unforgettable conversation during a school holiday, the man said the teacher gathered a few students after they had finished marking examination papers and spoke passionately about their future.
According to him, she said:
“If any of you ends up dropping out and becomes a commercial bike rider or a bus conductor, don’t greet me when you see me.”
He said he and his classmates laughed at the time, believing such a future could never happen to any of them.
However, tragedy struck after he lost his father in 2015. He explained that his mother’s business collapsed shortly afterward, leaving him with no option but to start working as a commercial motorcycle rider after completing secondary school in 2016 to support himself.
Recalling the emotional encounter, he said one day while waiting for passengers, he saw his former teacher approaching.
“She walked up to me and asked, ‘Bike man, are you going?’ I couldn’t answer. I just kept my head down, overwhelmed with shame,” he recalled.
The man said that after his teacher boarded another motorcycle, he returned home and broke down in tears.
“Not because I was ashamed of honest work, but because I remembered that conversation years earlier, and I felt like I had become exactly what she never wanted for any of us,” he said.
The touching story has since resonated with many social media users, with several people noting that life’s unexpected challenges can drastically change a person’s path despite their dreams and ambitions. Others praised the dignity of honest labour while stressing the importance of showing compassion and empathy to those facing difficult circumstances.
