Aremu Afolayan, a Nollywood actor, has retracted his previous comments against Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which provoked significant backlash.

In a poignant video posted to his Instagram page, he apologised to Nigerians, acknowledging that he said without thinking and had been misconstrued.

“I am so sober at the moment. First, to all Nigerians, all well‑wishers, all the people that wish this country goes better, please forgive me, I am sorry,” he said.

Aremu emphasised that he was not paid to support the administration and denied spreading falsehoods. He also spoke openly about the country’s instability, which prompted his previous comments.

He admitted that his views were influenced by a personal experience: his closest friend’s mother was abducted in Nigeria and millions were paid for her release.

The event left him disturbed and disappointed with the government’s approach to security.

“I am not supposed to bring this matter here… We paid millions for her release,” he said. “What I was trying to say in the video is someone tells you ‘nothing is happening, be calm’—don’t believe them, they are reading a script. That’s all I meant,” he added.

This follows the actor’s statements at a political support gathering for President Tinubu’s 2027 campaign, in which he stated that the president is doing a fine job and that the state is free of insecurity.

Aremu, on the other hand, regretted for hurting Nigerians with his prior words, conceding that the people, not the government, provided him with assistance in his career and companies.

He declared his withdrawal from all political and Tinubu-related activities, promising to be more cautious in the future.
