AFCON: What Morocco coach said about Super Eagles players, Eric Chelle after 4–2 defeat

Morocco advanced to the AFCON 2025 final on home soil after defeating Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in a tight semi-final match in Rabat.

The Atlas Lions needed spot kicks to win the game after both teams failed to score in regular and extra time at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah.

Head coach Walid Regragui thanked his players and supporters, citing the victory as the result of teamwork, sacrifice, and national pride.

“We received very touching messages, and they had a big impact on us. I am very proud of my players and our fans,” Regragui said.

The coach acknowledged that his team had a physically taxing match, but he maintained that the outcome justified the effort.

“We suffered a lot. Playing extra time consumed much energy, but reaching the final at home is a beautiful gift,” he added.

Regragui also praised Nigeria for their perseverance and discipline during the game.

I congratulate the Nigerian team and Coach Eric Chelle for the great work they have done,” he said.

During the shootout, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero, stopping penalties from Bruno Onyemaechi and Samuel Chukwueze.

The home crowd erupted in wild excitement after Youssef En-Nesyri scored the game-winning kick thanks to his efforts.

Following the game, Bounou expressed gratitude to the fans and gave thanks to teamwork for the well-deserved win.

“The atmosphere was wonderful. The match was very difficult, but the players did what was required,” he said.

Bounou, who was named TotalEnergies Man of the Match, commended Regragui’s readiness and the dedication of his teammates.

“The coach prepared us very well, and my teammates fought together. Our fans gave us extra motivation,” he added.

The team would soon focus on recuperation and last-minute preparations, according to Bounou.

“We will recover, prepare well and give our fans what they deserve,” he said.

In their quest for a second AFCON championship, Morocco will play Senegal in the final on Sunday in Rabat.

It has been precisely fifty years since the Atlas Lions last won the trophy, in 1976.
