AFCON 2025: “I like that Lookman and Osimhen had a fight on the pitch” — Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has batted down worries about a viral on-field altercation between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s recent AFCON match.

Speaking calmly about the situation, Mikel stated that the brief confrontation should be interpreted as a sign of devotion and competitiveness rather than split within the squad.

On the Obi One Podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder discussed the moment between the two Nigerian forwards during the game.

According to Mikel, such exchanges frequently show hunger, intensity, and a common desire to win, all of which are essential characteristics of successful teams.

“I like the fact that they both had an argument on the pitch. I like that they had a fight on the pitch. I want to see that,” he said.

Mikel noted that players that genuinely care about the outcome will naturally confront one another when standards decrease during matches.

Drawing on his club and international experience, he concluded that harmony alone does not win trophies.

“I’ve never seen a nice team that wins trophies,” he added, stressing that strong personalities often collide because of high expectations.

Mikel determined that conflicts are healthy if they occur on the field and are addressed immediately.

He described Osimhen and Lookman’s intensity as a positive signal as Nigeria prepares for future competitions.
