Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has hinted at a probable tactical change ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi-final against hosts Morocco, admitting that fatigue is starting to manifest among his players.

Nigeria has been the tournament’s most dominant team thus far, winning all five games, scoring a competition-high 14 goals, and overwhelming opponents with an aggressive, high-intensity style.

That attitude has propelled the Super Eagles past Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Mozambique, and Algeria to the final four.

However, as the tournament nears its conclusion, Chelle admits that the physical constraints of such strategy may necessitate a rethinking.

At his pre-match press conference, the Malian tactician conceded that his players are feeling the fatigue and suggested that Nigeria would take a more controlled approach against Morocco.

“I find that my group is tired; it might be time for me to change my approach,” Chelle said.

We’ll start that way, I think. We’ll hold on in the first half and try to play our game in the second half.”

The statements suggest a move away from Nigeria’s normal front-foot domination, with Morocco possibly gaining more possession early on while the Super Eagles manage their energy levels.

Despite Nigeria’s overwhelming 2-0 quarter-final victory against Algeria, Chelle emphasised that Morocco presents a unique tactical challenge and should not be judged by prior opponents.

“Algeria and Morocco are two good teams with good players,” he said. “But Morocco doesn’t play like Algeria, and Walid Regragui isn’t Vladimir Petkovic. I’ll have to work, and my group too, to beat this team tomorrow.”

Nigeria has already defeated two North African teams at AFCON 2025, but Morocco’s organisation, discipline, and home advantage make Wednesday’s match a unique scenario.

The semi-final will take place at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, with a spot in Sunday’s final at stake. The winner will play either Egypt or Senegal.
