Reno Omokri, a former presidential assistant, has blasted former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for claiming that President Bola Tinubu has abandoned administration by spending extended periods of time overseas.
Omokri responded to Obi’s post on X on Monday, in which Obi questioned the President’s whereabouts and portrayed his extended international trip as dereliction of duty.
In a reaction to X, Omokri accused Obi of circulating fake information and intentionally misled Nigerians about the President’s whereabouts and actions.
“I read your most recent attack on the President, and it was a new low, even for you, and grossly irresponsible. Saying that nobody knows where the President is is a lie,” Omokri said.
He further stated that the Presidency has been transparent regarding Tinubu’s movements, insisting that Nigerians were fully informed through official means.
According to Omokri, President Tinubu is currently in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which was announced officially.
He also refuted Obi’s assertion that Nigerians hadn’t heard from the President since December 2025, calling it utterly false.
Omokri recalled Tinubu’s New Year’s Day address to the nation, as well as many public engagements in late December 2025.
“Before that, the President visited Nigerian citizens in Borno, Bauchi and Lagos States between December 21 and December 23, 2025,” he stated.
He mentioned that Tinubu attended Sadeeq Sheriff’s wedding, the son of former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, during his visit to Maiduguri.
According to Omokri, the President also visited Bauchi to express his condolences to the family of Islamic scholar Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi before departing for Lagos.
“After that, he went on a short vacation as allowed by the Constitution,” Omokri added.
He dismissed Obi’s allegations as dishonest and harsh, claiming that the President’s actions did not constitute neglect.
In response to criticism of Tinubu’s foreign excursions, Omokri stated that Obi had a lack of grasp of governance and international relations.
“Your mentor, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, spent 342 days travelling abroad in eight years, yet you celebrate him,” he wrote.
According to Omokri, Obasanjo’s trips helped Nigeria get debt relief despite security challenges at the time.
He stated that foreign travel was necessary to attract investors and that Tinubu’s excursions were already yielding rewards.
Omokri referenced Tinubu’s attendance at the BRICS Summit in Brazil, which he linked to a $2.5 billion investment from Brazilian meat giant JBS.
He also referenced Tinubu’s visit to Qatar, where investors reportedly promised $300 billion in investments in Nigeria.
Omokri reported that these engagements boosted Nigeria’s GDP from ₦269.29 trillion in May 2023 to ₦372.8 trillion.
He noted that foreign portfolio investments increased to approximately $14 billion during the first and third quarters of 2025.
“All of these saw Nigeria recording a projected GDP growth of 4.1 per cent in 2025,” Omokri said.
He finished by saying Obi’s words demonstrated a lack of leadership ability.
“That you do not know this is proof, once again, that you are a trader, not a leader,” Omokri added.
