The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have rejected the Electoral Act 2026, which was just passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling it anti-democratic and an attempt to establish a one-party state.

At a press conference held today, February 26, at the Treanscorp Hilton in Abuja, leaders of the two parties vowed to use all constitutional means to oppose the Act’s implementation, emphasising their commitment to preserving democracy and ensuring that Nigerians’ votes count in the 2027 elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, ADC National Chairman David Mark, ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, and NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed were among the opposition leaders present at the meeting. Former lawmakers Linda Ukeje, Dino Melaye, Bolaji Abdullahi, Buba Galadima, Lawal Batagarawa, Salihu Lukman, and Yunusa Tanko were also present.

Only the ADC and NNPP attended the ceremony, indicating minimal involvement in the coordinated rejection of the new Electoral Act.
