Abia targets exit from National Grid as Government backs independent power plan

Governor Alex Otti has announced plans to move Abia State away from dependency on Nigeria’s national electricity grid, indicating a significant shift in the state’s energy strategy.

According to the governor, efforts are already on to obtain alternate power alternatives, with the state government backing a private-sector-led project aimed at providing more steady and predictable electricity.

He stated that international conversations are currently underway as part of the project’s implementation strategy.

If successful, the move might place Abia as one of Nigeria’s few states that can drastically lessen its reliance on the national grid, which has long been criticised for inefficiency and frequent outages.

“My main target is to remove the entire Abia from the National grid. My Hon. Commissioner for Power is in the Netherlands negotiating for this. Even though it’s a private enterprise, we are ready to support it because it will benefit us all”
