Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, Esq., a Nigerian attorney, has filed a legal lawsuit against MTN Nigeria due to what she claims was an exceptionally quick exhaustion of her 800GB yearly data plan.
Adams, a barrister and solicitor at the Supreme Court of Nigeria, said that after paying ₦125,000 on May 15, 2026, she only had 91.45GB by August 27.
The attorney said that the network’s records indicated that roughly 708.55GB of her 800GB allotment had been consumed within roughly 104 days in a formal complaint sent to MTN Nigeria customer service.
Given that the plan was purchased as an annual bundle, she regarded the pace of depletion as unexpected.
Only roughly 11.4% of the initial data allocation was left, according to her complaint.
Adams expressed concerns regarding the accuracy and accountability of the withdrawals from her data allocation, stating that she has been an MTN user since she was ten years old.
She clarified that she mostly uses one mobile device for her internet activity and that she does not think of herself as a high-volume data user.
She said:
“I do not use multiple devices on the line, I am not a gamer, and my ordinary internet usage is substantially limited to routine activities such as social media, messaging, browsing and other personal online activities on a single mobile device.”
The lawyer therefore requested that MTN investigate the depletion and provide a detailed account of how the data was consumed.
In order to reconcile the initial 800GB allotment with the roughly 708.55GB supposedly used, Adams requested documents from the telecoms operator covering the period from May 15 to August 27, 2026.
She asked for a chronological statement detailing her data balance and deductions, the date and time of each data-consumption session, and the volume deducted during each session.
In cases when MTN is technically able to provide such information, she additionally asked for details on the applications, services, categories, or destinations accountable for any notable deduction.
According to the attorney, a thorough technical and account-level assessment was necessary due to the extent and speed of the depletion.
She emphasised that she needs a clear explanation of how the deductions were achieved and demanded an immediate inquiry and reconciliation of the data usage.
Adams was requesting a response from MTN Nigeria at the time of the complaint, as well as comprehensive documentation that would enable her to independently confirm the stated data consumption.
