The founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, better known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, has expressed alarm about the increasing number of fraudsters operating in society, including churches.
The well-known preacher described a recent encounter with someone who purportedly pretended to be him in order to defraud gullible people as an indication of difficult times.
During a midweek church session, Bishop Oyedepo revealed the event and described how the alleged fraudster attempted to exploit his identity.
He claims that the person pretended to be Bishop Oyedepo and made demands on one of his helpers.
“We had an experience some time back when someone was claiming to be me and that I was asking for something,” he told the congregation.
His helper decided to confirm the claim before acting, which caused the attempt to fail.
“My assistant called and the person said, ‘Can I speak to Bishop Oyedepo?’ My assistant said yes, you can talk to him,” he explained.
According to Bishop Oyedepo, the call caught the impostor off guard and exposed them right away.
“He could not wait to make findings and ended up cursing himself,” the cleric added.
Bishop Oyedepo cautioned that scammers are increasingly working bravely, even in places of worship, using the experience as a lesson.
He pointed out that criminal activity has expanded into churches and schools in addition to markets and workplaces.
“That is the world we live in today. 419 plenty in church, plenty in market, school and everywhere,” he said.
Worshippers and the general public were advised by the clergyman to always be vigilant and perceptive.
Regardless of who is mentioned, he recommended individuals to adequately check information and refrain from acting on unsubstantiated requests.
“Walk in the truth and you will never be trapped,” Bishop Oyedepo concluded.
