Social media commentator Honour Oriretan has criticized comedian Mark Angel over his recent wedding, arguing that the timing was inappropriate given ongoing security concerns in Nigeria.
In a post shared online, Oriretan linked the comedian’s marriage celebration to the recent abd¥ction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, suggesting that public figures should be sensitive to the national mood during periods of crisis.
According to him, celebrating a major personal milestone while many families are dealing with the trauma of insecurity could be perceived as lacking empathy for victims and their loved ones.
He further argued that some of the k•dnapped children and teachers could be supporters or fans of the comedian, adding that influential personalities should carefully consider public sentiment before organizing high-profile celebrations.
The comments have generated mixed reactions on social media. While some users agreed that public figures should show solidarity during national tragedies, others defended Mark Angel’s decision, arguing that personal life events do not necessarily have to be postponed because of challenges affecting the country.
The debate has reignited broader discussions about the responsibilities of celebrities during times of national hardship and whether personal celebrations should be influenced by ongoing public crises.
Quoting his post, Oriretan said: “Mark Angel marrying at this time the country is bleeding is unwise. A proof of ‘I don’t care’ attitude, lack of empathy.”
He also added: “Those kids, teachers kidnapped in Oyo state are probably his fans but thinking marrying now is the best way to show them support is more unwise.”
On the age gap, he wrote: “Most unwise marrying a girl probably in her early 20s instead of from his age. THIS SURE A MISPLACED PRIORITY.”
Oriretan concluded with a strong demand, stating: “MY JUDGEMENT: Mark Angel has 48hrs to apologize, declare this wedding invalid to show solidarity with those kids, teachers suff£ring in the bush & redo fresh wedding after their release. Act fast.. Y’all be wise.. Don’t be unwise.”
